Goodrich early established a reputation as a dangerous left-handed sharpshooter. He enjoyed a remarkable college career at UCLA before moving on to the NBA where he spent 14 season with the Lakers, Phoenix Suns and New Orleans Jazz. At UCLA, Goodrich was on back-to-back NCAA Championship teams in 1964 and 1965, and in his last three years with the Bruins they went 78-11.

Goodrich played in five NBA All-Star Games and was the leading scorer (25.9 ppg) on the Lakers' 1972 NBA Championship team that set an NBA record with 33 consecutive wins.

In July 1976, Goodrich signed with the Jazz, and as a compensation the Lakers received New Orleans' first round pick in the 1979 draft. That pick resulted in the drafting of Magic Johnson.
