Kupchak is the current general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers since the 2000-2001 season after Jerry West moved to the Memphis Grizzlies organization. Kupchak played four seasons with the Lakers, from 1981-1982 to 1985-1986 (he didn't play in 1982-1983). Prior to this, he spent five seasons with the Washington Bullets. As Lakers general manager, his best transaction is generally considered the acquisition of former superstars Karl Malone and Gary Payton, and his most controversial trade transaction was the trade of Shaquille O'Neal to the Miami Heat for Lamar Odom, Caron Butler and Brian Grant.
