Played for the Lakers from 1976 to 1978
Abernethy were an All-NCAA Tournament selection in 1976 and graduated from Indiana University with a B.S. degree in Business. After two seasons with the Lakers, he was traded to the Buffalo Braves for a second-round pick before the 1978 draft. With that pick, the Lakers selected forward Lew Massey from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Massey never played in an NBA regular season game. Abernethy played four more seasons in the NBA (for the Golden State Warriors and Indiana Pacers) before playing one year in Italy. He owns his own Indianapolis-based business, The Abernethy Company, specializing in real estate development.
